I recently started using a split keyboard, more specifically an Ergodox EZ. For some reason that I can’t remember now, I bought it last year on facebook marketplace because I had heard good things about split keyboards. I tried using the standard layout and gave up, probably in a few hours. I had always told myself I’d come back to it and try to learn it again, but didn’t for a while.

A couple weeks ago, I had some time so I decided to sit down and make a layout that works for me. It’s pretty similar to a standard keyboard, but has some differences because this layout doesn’t have the same amount of keys as a standard one. I genuinely thought it would take me way more time to get used to it, but honestly, it was pretty quick (a couple of days to get back to typing around 80-90 wpm). I definitely had to iterate on the layout a bit, but I think I’ve found one that I like.

This general concept, though, kinda stuck with me. There’s so many things I do out of habit. I learned them once and never really challenged them ever again. I want to slowly do things a bit out of my comfort zone and break those habits. Then, when the new way becomes a habit, I’ll break it again.
